Welcome to the Citizendium! We hope you will contribute boldly and well. Here are pointers for a quick start, and see Getting Started for other helpful "startup" links, our help system and CZ:Home for the top menu of community pages. You can test out editing in the sandbox if you'd like. If you need help to get going, the forum is one option. That's also where we discuss policy and proposals. You can ask any user or the editors for help, too. Just put a note on their "talk" page. Again, welcome and have fun!
You can find some more information about our collaboration groups if you follow this link Citizendium_Pilot:Discipline_Workgroups.You can always ask me on my talk page or others about how to proceed or any other question you might have.
Kind Regards,

The above image was uploaded with incorrect copyright data. The source of the image states, http://www.harappa.com/welcome2.html and you must contact them to use that image in CZ. Please do so and upload the results to Help:Images#Documenting_free_content_releases_and_images_by_permission. Please be careful with this sort of thing. If you need help, see Help:Images and if you need individualized help just ask me on my talk page. Stephen Ewen 23:18, 17 May 2007 (CDT)

Subrahmanyan Chandrasekhar image
Place it in the article with the credit line as you see. Stephen Ewen 15:27, 3 June 2007 (CDT)
- That's what I thought. But unfortunately that is not true. I did this work while on Wikipedia, but unfortunately, I cannot show the diff as I got them deleted (they had my email address). Here is the relevant conversation though:
Date: Tue, 20 Mar 2007 14:40:24 -0400 From: Kathy Lestition <xxxx@head.cfa.harvard.edu> X-Mailer: exmh version 2.6.3 04/04/2003 with nmh-1.0.4 To: xxxx@xxxx Cc: xxxx@head.cfa.harvard.edu Subject: Request to use image of Chandrasekar Dear Anupam Srivastava, I am reply to your message, included below, regarding the use of the images of Subrahmanyan Chandrasekhar posted on the Chandra X-ray Center public web site. If you return to the page you cite below and look at the credit under each of the three images, you will see that the copyright is in fact NOT held by us. Two of the images are credited to the AIP, the last to the University of Chicago. When we were constructing this site some 9 years ago, after our satellite was named after Prof. Chandrasekhar, we found to our surprise that none of the images of him were in the public domain. We were able to obtain permission from the AIP and the University of Chicago to display these three images on our our web site for informational purposes, but we do not own the images and do not have authority to give permission for re-use. Thus, you will have to send your request to the AIP and to the University of Chicago, the organizations which own the images. Sincerely, Kathleen Lestition Outreach Coordinator Chandra X-ray Center
It is my understanding that University of Chicago will be a better bet than AIP. But at the end, at least my attempts were futile. Have a look here: [1]. Some one may eventually get these images released even under CC license, but it is near impossible for me to do it. In such case, I think Fair Use is actually, just fair!--Anupam Srivastava 01:45, 4 June 2007 (CDT)
- Ah, okay, very good. Thanks for expanding my frame-of-reference about this whole situation.
- Of course, this means one of two things: 1) the information at their website is inaccurate and misleading: "The images on this web site may be used for non-commercial educational and public information purposes. Please credit images to "NASA/CXC/SAO" unless other credits are given. In that case, credit the appropriate organization(s) or person(s) as they are listed with the image on our site"; or 2) Ms. Lestition is mistaken.
- But there is no big deal in following through. I will handle this myself.
- And there is no way to even so much as think of getting any image of him released under a free license in this case, but obtaining permission is certainly possible, especially for an image such as http://zuserver2.star.ucl.ac.uk/~apod/apod/ap950901.html
- And the Univ of Chicago explicitly denies that use of an image of theirs is fair use: http://www.press.uchicago.edu/Misc/Chicago/permissions.html
- What I'd like to see happen before moving on this further is that you first create a very high quality article into which the image will go, and even get it nominated for approval. Then we can use http://www.press.uchicago.edu/Misc/Chicago/publication_permission.pdf to seek permission for the image at http://zuserver2.star.ucl.ac.uk/~apod/apod/ap950901.html
- This may take some time and persistence, but I think it is doable.
