Limit Variable
The TOC-right and TOC-left templates have "limit" variables. But does setting these variables override the $wgMaxTocLevel variable? It seems that the "limit" variable has no effect in TOC-right. I am interested in using this property as some of the pages I'm "working" on have extremely long TOCs and limiting the depth of those TOCs would improve readability. Any thoughts? Russell D. - Chris Day has a TOC that scrolls. >>> Russell D. Jones 00:09, 4 February 2009 (UTC)
- The only problem is with printing; only the visible text is printed. We had this issue with references too. It's a hard call as how often will people print out the pages? Should we cater to that need or not? Chris Day 00:15, 4 February 2009 (UTC)
- If you're asking me, my answer is "no." >>> Jones 00:46, 4 February 2009 (UTC)

- Nope for the TOC only or for the reference section too? Chris Day 08:10, 4 February 2009 (UTC)
- Whoops, missed the reference reference. Well, Yes, references should be printed. I don't think it necessary that a TOC be printed. It seems to me that the TOC exists to facilitate quick movement in the webbrowser and to give a quick organization schema of the article. Neither of which are necessary in a paper copy. Footnotes, of course, are necessary in a paper copy. Jones 15:14, 4 February 2009 (UTC)
- We agree on this then. In the past, if the TOC gets too long, I have sometimes started to axe the subsections and format them in bold text without being a section heading. But limiting the TOC works too. Chris Day 15:35, 4 February 2009 (UTC)
- But this gets back to my first question. The "Limit" variable in the TOC function doesn't seem to work. Or, alternatively, maybe I wasn't using the proper syntax. Jones 15:46, 4 February 2009 (UTC)
- Ah, I missed that point. On my talk page I believe the limit is on the table cell not the TOC. I try and recreate that effect for you on this template. Chris Day 15:50, 4 February 2009 (UTC)
OK I just tweaked it. See if that work the way you want. It is currently set to 400px height. Chris Day 16:00, 4 February 2009 (UTC)
- Chris, would you object if we set height to auto? Having a 400px height creates a large white space on a page for a short TOC. Russell D. Jones 01:14, 23 February 2009 (UTC)
