The Longtan Dam is a large dam on the Hongshui River, a tributary of the Pearl River.[1][2]

The dam, at 192 meters, is said to be the tallest in the world.[3] The attached ship lift is said to be the fastest in the world.

The Dam's first of three operational generating units, was tested in May of 2007.[4] When completed, in 2009, its nine turbogenerators will have a total generating capacity of 6.3 million kW and the project is expected to generate 18.7 billion kWh of electricity annually.
