FC Schalke 04 (formally known as FC Gelsenkirchen-Schalke 04 e.V., often abbreviated to Schalke 04 or S04) is a German football club from Gelsenkirchen. The first team is currently (2019–20) a member of the Bundesliga, which is the highest tier of football competition in Germany. Schalke have been one of the most successful teams in German football. They have won the national championship seven times, but the last one was in 1958 and they have never won the Bundesliga, which began in 1963–64. They have won the DFB-Pokal five times, most recently in 2010–11. Schalke have had one European success when they won the UEFA Cup in 1997.

The club was founded in 1904 by a handful of young men from Schalke, a quarter of the city of Gelsenkirchen. In June 2018, it had more than 155,000 members and was the second biggest sports club in Germany. Their home ground is the Veltins-Arena, opened in 2001 and holding 62,271 spectators.[1]
