Canoeing is governed worldwide by the International Canoe Federation (ICF), which is based in Lausanne with 157 affiliated countries. There are several disciplines, the main variant being kayaking. Various canoeing and kayaking events have been held at the Olympic Games since 1936. At the 2016 Games, there were twelve sprint and four slalom events.
