Autocracy [r]: Government by a single, supreme leader. A modern version of Aristotle's "rule by one", generally seen as different from monarchy, but closely related to dictatorship and, even some forms of oligarchy. Thus, Syria was, until recently, seen as a monarchy while Egypt under Mubarek was an autocracy.
