Anglo-American Cataloguing Rules (AACR) is a standard for descriptive cataloguing developed by the Library Association of Great Britain (now known as the Chartered Institute of Library and Information Professionals), and the American Library Association, published in 1967 in separate British and North American texts. In 1978, it was revised into one consolidated text, known as AACR2 (Anglo-American Cataloguing Rules, second edition). This set of rules was adopted by major libraries in most English-speaking countries, and translated into many other languages. AACR2 was modified in 1988, and in 1998 was renamed as AACR2R (Anglo-American Cataloguing Rules, second edition, 1998 revision) with a further revision. Despite initial reservations, major libraries since 2013 have gradually begun adopting RDA (Resource Description and Access) as a cataloguing standard, which is to eventually replace AACR2R.
