Robert Rubin was born in Roanoke, Virginia, in 1958, and grew up on the campus of Hollins College, where he was in the company of writers from early on: his babysitters included future novelists and writers such as Annie Dillard, Lee Smith, Sylvia Wilkinson, Katie Letcher Lyle, among others. Unfortunately, as he was too young to read, this was mostly lost on him. He moved to Chapel Hill, North Carolina with his family in 1968, and graduated from Kenyon College, in Ohio, majoring in studio art, in 1980. He worked as a newspaper reporter in Chapel Hill and Roanoke, Virginia, and earned a Master's Degree in English and Creative Writing at Hollins College while moonlighting as a reporter. He left newspaper work to enroll in the Ph.D. program in English Literature at UNC-Chapel Hill, where he taught freshman English for five years, worked as a technical writer and editor, and served as editor of Carolina Quarterly. He left the Ph.D. program in 1989, absent dissertation, to begin work as a professional editor. He has edited books and magazines at Algonquin Books of Chapel Hill, ISA, and the Appalachian Trail Conference. His published books include the edited poetry anthologies POETRY OUT LOUD (1993) and LOVE POETRY OUT LOUD (2007), and the travel memoir, ON THE BEATEN PATH: AN APPALACHIAN PILGRIMAGE (2000). He has also published articles on hiking and backpacking.
