Dr. Nicholas Rasmussen is the Head of the School of History and Philosophy of Science at the University of New South Wales.
Dr. Rasmussen received an MA in Philosophy from the University of Chicago in 1986. He received a second Masters Degree, an MPhil in History and Philosophy of Science from Cambridge University in 1987. He obtained his PhD in Biological Sciences from Stanford University in 1992. Finally, he is currently working on a third Masters Degree, an MPH from Sydney University, due 2007.
Dr. Rasmussen has published extensively. His recent book, Picture Control (Stanford University Press, 1997), about the development of biological Electron Microscopy won two major prizes. He was the Chief Editor of Metascience, the only Australian journal in the history and philosophy of science, 2001-2002. He still serves on the editorial board. Dr. Rasmussen's areas of interest include history of the cell, molecular and developmental biology; history of pharmocology, history of psychoactive drugs. He considers his area of expertise to be the history of modern (twentieth century) biological sciences.
