James began his piano studies at the age of four and violin studies at the age of seven. At the age of eight, Chang performed the Mozart Concerto No. 19 and received a standing ovation. He made his solo debut at the age of 10 performing an hour-long classical program in front of an audience of 300. His most recent awards include winning 1st in Jacksonville's Competition for Outstanding Young Pianists, 1st place in both piano solo and piano concerto in the 2006 Greater Jacksonville Piano Competition. In addition, in the Florida Federation of Music Clubs' competition, 1st place in "Very Difficult I" piano sight-playing and duo, and finally, Chang was chosen to be one of five finalists in the Senior Piano Concerto category. He then went on to place 2nd for the state of Florida. Currently, he is studying Ondine (the first piece from Gaspard de la Nuit: Trois Poèmes pour Piano d'apres Aloysius Bertrand) by Maurice Ravel, Piano Sonata by Bela Bartok (1st mvt.), Ballade No. 4 by Frederic Chopin, Prelude in b minor, and Concerto No. 2, Op.18, 1st mvt. by Sergei Rachmaninoff. In addition to learning piano, he is also an advanced violinist and is currently learning Praeludium and Allegro in the style of Pugnani by Fritz Kreisler. James is studying piano with Myrtle Edwards and Peggy Fleming, while studying violin with former semi-finalist of the Paganini International Violin Competition, Aaron Krosnick. He is also a violinist in the Philharmonic Orchestra of the Jacksonville Symphony Youth Orchestra ( www.jaxsymphony.org/jsyo).

His interests include studying music (especially orchestral scores such as Stravinsky's orchestral works), computer technology, Chinese medicine, and other subjects.
