Bill Freese was born in Miles City, Montana, on August 17, 1956 to Jean and Martin Freese. Freese was educated at West Bountiful Elementary School in West Bountiful, UT, Washington Elementary and Junior High School in Miles City, MT, Custer County High School in Miles City, and Montana State University in Bozeman, MT. He has a BS in History with a minor in Library Science. Following summer jobs as a painter, an archeological technician and an organizer of a historical collection, Freese taught AudioVisual Media at Custer County District High School in Miles City from 1980 to 1982. He has worked and taught in the Instructional Media Lab, Department of Education, Montana State University-Bozeman since September 1982. Freese's general interests include history, science, religion, science fiction, photography, videography, computer programming, hiking and most recently virtual environments. Areas of special interest include the cartoonist Abner Dean and the virtual world Second Life.
