User:Anthony Skjellum

Anthony Skjellum studied Physics at the California Institute of Technology, where he received the BS degree in 1984 (with Honors). He continued studies at Caltech and received the MS in Chemical Engineering (1985), and the PhD in Chemical Engineering, with Computer Science Minor in 1990. His dissertation involved high performance computing and simulation, with particular attention to distributed memory computing, mathematical libraries, and advanced message passing systems for parallel computing.

Skjellum worked for the Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory from 1990 to 1993, in the role of Computer Scientist, where he extended his work on parallel libraries and message passing systems. In 1993 he joined the faculty of Mississippi State University, as Assistant Professor. He was tenured and promoted in 1997. His work at Mississippi State included key contributions to the Message Passing Interface Standard (MPI), the Vector Signal and Image Processing (VSIPL) Standard, and to DARPA programs involving high performance embedded computing. His group at Mississippi State co-authored the MPICH open middleware for the MPI standard together with Argonne National Laboratory researchers. This middleware is still in wide use today,worldwide.

Skjellum transitioned to the University of Alabama at Birmingham in 2003, where he is Professor and Chair of the Department of Computer and Information Sciences (www.cis.uab.edu). His interests in distributed computing, message passing, and General Purpose GPU programming continue to this day.

Besides academic work, Skjellum co-founded MPI Software Technology, Inc in 1996, as a spin-off of research at Mississippi State. MPI Software Technology merged with Racksaver, Inc, a blade server company headquartered in San Diego in 2003, to form Verari Systems.
