Suggestions: Expand on the destruction of the temple

  • Under Ancient Jewish History it seems to me the significance of the destruction of the temple in Jerusalem is understated. I would like to see some a link to or discussion of what the destruction of the temple and related events means to the Jews today. I don't mean to advocate anything a devout Jew would find offensive and don't have any sources for the following, but my recollection (as a Christian uneducated in what today's experts in the religion teach) is that: the Tanakh includes a prediction somewhere that Messiah would reveal himself in some way near AD 12 while Israel as a nation retained the "sceptre" or power of capital punishment; Daniel prophecies that Messiah would come into his kingdom near AD 30, after Israel was subject to Roman law regarding capital punishment; the destruction of the Temple in AD 66 meant the loss of the only authorized place for worship under Mosaic law, so there is no way to satisfy that law while worshipping as a Jew today until the temple is rebuilt; along with the temple, all the records of royal lines were also destroyed, so there is no longer any legal means of proving the inheritance of David's royal line if a new claimant (including the Messiah) were to arise. If I were to find an article or articles from a reputable non-jewish authority, would that be interesting? Thanks for all your good work here! --Tim McCully 20:10, 28 May 2007 (CDT)
