The Special Branch, originally the Special Irish Branch, was an entity within the Metropolitan Police of London, founded in March of 1883 to counter the attacks of the Irish Republican Brotherhood or Fenians. Over the years, its area of responsibility grew to combating a wider range of extremist and terrorist activity so the word 'Irish' was dropped from its title.
