The [[U.S. Army M4 is a shorter-barreled and generally lighter-weight version of the standard [[M16 rifle with an extendable stock. It takes the same ammunition, but is more convenient in vehicles and in the close spaces of urban combat.

Like the M16, it has a [[Picatinny rail system that accepts accessories common to both types. These accessories include the under-barrel [[M203 grenade launcher|M203 and [[M320 grenade launchers.
