Field hockey is an outdoor sport played, generally on grass, by two teams of eleven players each including goalkeepers. Players hit the ball with the curved face of a stick and the object of the game is to score the most goals. In most of the world, field hockey is simply called hockey. The world governing body is the Fédération Internationale de Hockey (International Hockey Federation; FIH) which was founded on 7th January 1924. Its headquarters is in Lausanne, with more than 135 national associations as members.
