Although the term biathlon may be properly used to describe any sports contest consisting of two distinct disciplines, it is now most often used to describe a winter sport combining a cross country skiing race with a target shooting competition. Competitors race all out, but must pause at designated areas, gather themselves, shoot, and then continue racing.

Biatholon debuted as an Olympic event in 1960.
