Cefuroxime is a beta-lactamase restistant, broad-spectrum antibiotic medication within the cephalosporin class of antibiotics.

Chemistry

The IUPAC name for cefuroxime is (6R,7R)-3-(carbamoyloxymethyl)-7-[[(2E)-2-furan-2-yl-2-methoxyiminoacetyl]amino]-8-oxo-5-thia-1-azabicyclo[4.2.0]oct-2-ene-2-carboxylic acid. It has chemical formula C₁₆H₁₆N₄O₈S and molecular mass 424.3850. It antibacterial action is due to the presence of a beta-lactam, which reacts with bacterial cell wall proteins.
