Detroit is located in the South-East region of the State of Michigan. The downtown area is on the Detroit River, directly across from Windsor, Ontario, Canada. Since Henry Ford developed the assembly line and mass production of the automobile in Detroit, it has for decades been known as "The Motor City" or "Motown," as well as the "Paris of the Americas" because of its street mapping and cultural diversity. In the 1960s Detroit became known for popular music when Barry Gordy founded Motown Records near the General Motors Headquarters, in what is now known as the New Center Area.
