George W. Bush is the 43d president of the United States, first assuming office in January of 2001, and set to complete his second term in January of 2009. He was elected as a Republican over Democrat Al Gore in a controversial election in 2000 that turned on 500 ballots in Florida; he was reelected by 3 million majority over John Kerry in 2004. Previously he was governor of Texas (1994-2001), and served as an aide to his father, President George H.W. Bush.

Important events during his presidency included the September 11th terrorist attack, the invasion of Afghanistan and Iraq, the passage of PATRIOT Act, the Plame Affair, NSA wiretapping controversy, and the U.S. Attorneys dismissal scandal. He will be ineligible for the presidential election in 2008 due to term limit in the United States Constitution and he will step down from presidency in 2009.
