Detroit is located in the South-East region of the State of Michigan. The downtown area is on the Detroit River which is directly across from Windor, Canada. In the 1960's Detroit became known as Motown when Barry Gordy founded Motown Records near the General Motors Headquarters, in what is now known as the New center Area. Since Henry Ford developed the assembly line and mass production of the automobile in Detroit, it has for decades been known as "The Motor City", as well as the Paris of the Americas due to it's street mapping and cultural diversity.
