Permafrost is soil whose temperature continuously remains below the freezing point of pure water (i.e. 0°C) for at least two years. It is typically found in polar regions and at high altitudes. At temperatures only slightly below 0°C, much of the water in the ground is still liquid due to the presence of minerals, soluble organic matter, and phase boundaries.
