In medicine, peripheral vascular disease is a "pathological processes involving any one of the blood vessels in the vasculature outside the heart."[1]
Diagnosis
Physical examination
On physical examination, the ankle brachial index (ABI) can be estimated by palpating the distal pulse. When compared to measurement by Doppler ultrasonography, the accuracy for detecting an ABI < 0.9 is:[2]
- sensitivity = 88%
- specificity = 82%
