Henry David Thoreau (July 12, 1817 in Concord, Mass. - May 6, 1862 in Concord, Mass.), who was christened David Henry, was an American philosopher, essayist, botanist, poet, and antislavery activist, who, in his life as well as in his writings, developed a rigid, but impressive, individualism.
