Star Trek is a science fiction entertainment franchise that began with the television series Star Trek in 1966. Created by Gene Roddenberry, the series ran on the American network NBC for three seasons before being cancelled. Despite this fact, it remained popular and gave birth to a string of TV series, films, novels, comic books, video games, merchandising, and other forms of entertainment.

Cast

Although the focus of the show was the long-term voyage of the starship Enterprise, there were a few principal cast members that appeared in nearly every episode:

Captain James T. Kirk, portrayed by William Shatner, was the captain of the ship. Although many of the shows included him as the chief protagonist, sometimes the amount of time he appeared on-screen was relatively short but significant to the episode's plot.

Spock (often refered to as "Mister Spock"), the pointy-eared Vulcan, portrayed by Leonard Nimoy, was the second in command in Kirk's absence.

Doctor McCoy, played by DeForest Kelley: the ship's doctor, surgeon, and nurse.

Uhura, played by Nichelle Nichols was an especially significant character in the show; her gender and race played a major part of the show's accomplishment in representing a democratic demographic in a major television series.

Scotty, referred to as Mister Scott, played by James Doohan was the ship's engineer and the man responsible for operating the transporter or "beamer", as in the phrase "Beam me up, Scotty."

Sulu, a helmsman, played by George Takei.

Chekov, another helmsman played by Walter Koenig.
