Don't understand

Josy, why "... played a key rôle in" .... instead of "... played a key role in ..." ?? Milton Beychok 00:54, 16 December 2010 (UTC)

Because it is (a) correct (spelling). :-) --Peter Schmitt 01:17, 16 December 2010 (UTC)
I grant you that it is "a" correct spelling ... but it is more French than the more common English word, n'est-il pas ? Milton Beychok 05:02, 16 December 2010 (UTC)
I myself feel that to use "rôle" in today's English is pedantic, pretentious, affected, and essentially incorrect. I thought that maybe The New Yorker might use it (they still use ö in coördinate, for instance) but I just found a recent New Yorker issue online and they too are spelling it "role". I myself might write something like, "Marlon Brando played the rôle of Mr. Christian in Mutiny on the Bounty, but in my own life Christianity plays no role at all." But I doubt it. Milt, I were you, I would change it back. And if Peter reverts that, then you could file a formal "Request for Decision" to the EC -- it would give us sometime important to consider, hehe.... Hayford, I agree with you completely and hopefully the author of this article, Josy Shewell Brockway , will do the right thing and change it. I don't want to start a revert war with Peter or anyone else ... but thanks for your erudite support. Milton Beychok 17:22, 16 December 2010 (UTC)
