Ceres is a dwarf planet. It was classified as such when this new category was created by the IAU in 2006. When it was discovered on the first day of the 19th century, Ceres was classified as a planet, albeit a strangely small one; after the discovery of Pallas, Juno and Vesta, it was reclassified as the largest asteroid, which status it retains alongside its new one.
