By direct referencing, we mean that a reference has its own page here at Citizendium, e.g. at CZ:Ref:DOI:10.1371/journal.pone.0001683 (to which CZ:Ref:Stringer 2008 Effectiveness of Journal Ranking Schemes as a Tool for Locating Information redirects). This way of referencing deviates from usual wiki habits (in which the same reference would be provided as a footnote[1] to the page that references it, see below) but is assumed to be more convenient for online reading, particularly if the references are labeled such that they can be easily identified in the context of the referring article (e.g. as Stringer et al., 2008).
