Hello, I'm Steven, a sophmore at the University of South Carolina.  I currently live in Columbia South Carolina and lived near Lynchburg Virginia (up near the mountains) for some years. My major is history, and I plan to eventually get a PhD and become a professor. My interests include history (especially Middle Eastern and European), politics (especially international relations), world cultures, and foreign languages. I have some knowledge of Spanish, but am nowhere near fluent in it. I am studying Arabic, and hope to learn French and perhaps even Persian at some point. My politics are very to the left-I most identify with Socialism, and wish the United States had a credible Socialist party (as opposed to the one we have now, which is a joke). In the Mideast, I tend to be moderately pro-Palestinian, and favor I Binational solution to the Arab-Israeli conflict. I am against the war in Iraq, and do not support partition as a solution to Iraq's ethnic problems.

My primary interest is the history of the Islamic world (though the rest of the planet is pretty interesting too). I'm also into politics (I'm very much a leftist). Right now, I'm mostly interested in writing about the Arab world and South and Central Asia.

Besides English, I'm learning to speak Arabic, and have studied French (which I plan to take up again) and Spanish (which I've more or less abandoned, though I can still translate simple sentences). I plan to study Persian at some point too (assuming I can find someplace that offers classes in it). My hobbies include reading (mostly history and fantasy/science fiction-my favorite author is Tolkien), browsing Wikipedia for hours, and listening to classical Rock and Roll.

I've been rather inactive recently-tons of life stuff, just moved, etc. hopefully I'll start working again soon.
