The first protein complex in the light-dependent reactions of photosynthesis in plants, algae and cyanobacteria. It uses photons of light to energize electrons to reduce plastoquinone, the electrons are replaced by the photolysis of  water that results in the formation of molecular oxygen.
A multi-subunit protein pigment complex embedded in thylakoid membranes, mediating the initial light harvesting and electron transfer steps in the light-dependent reactions of photosynthesis in plants, algae and cyanobacteria.
