Miltonia × flava, illustration
Miltonia flava, M. anceps and M. pinelli were three species of Miltonia which remained uncertain since their publication until recent years when taxonomists concluded these species, which had never been found again since their original descriptions, were in fact the natural hybrid between M. flavescens and M. spectabilis, occasionally found in nature. Natural hybrids result in variable plants that may be closer to the father, to the mother, or any intermediate mixture, therefore the doubts about the real identity of the plants and the high number of descriptions. A quick comparison of this illustration to the one published by Guido Pabst in Orchidaceae Brasilienses as Miltonia × festiva, yet another synonym, is enough to clear any doubt about their real identity.
