Grace Fu Hai Yien is a Singaporean politician, and People's Action Party member.
Controversy
Controversial statement on ministerial pay
In January 2012, Fu made a statement on planned 36–37% income cuts for ministers, saying that if ministerial pay was further reduced in the future, it would "make it harder for anyone considering political office".[1][2][3][4][5] Her comments contributed to the ongoing public debate over compensation and motivation of public officials, and were subject to criticism from netizens in Singapore. She later made a Facebook post claiming that others may had misunderstood her remarks.[6][7]
Controversial speech on Singapore's chicken supply
On 17 July 2022, on Singapore's chicken supply issues, Fu made a speech in parliament stating that consumer can purchase other form of meats like eggs if they can't find chicken. She received public criticism for telling the people to go for other form of meats instead of finding a solution on supply issues.[8]
Comparing S$18 pasta to S$5 hawker wanton mee
On 25 March 2025, Fu made a remark during an interview with CNA stating that: “Is there a way for us to share a bit more with the food cost? I always think that if you’re prepared to pay S$18 [or] S$20 for a pasta, why are you not prepared to pay S$5 for a wanton mee?”. She also stated that the hawkers find it difficult to increase their prices, because consumers continue to expect cheap meals from hawker stalls despite increasing operational costs.
Her remark resulted in public criticism, some pointed out the difference between hawker and restaurant, and that rental cost is the issue that hawkers is facing.[9]
