Cast
Although the focus of the show was the long-term voyage of the starship Enterprise, there were a few principal cast members that appeared in nearly every episode:
- Captain James T. Kirk, portrayed by William Shatner, was the captain of the ship. Although many of the shows included him as the chief protagonist, sometimes the amount of time he appeared on-screen was relatively short but significant to the episode's plot.
- Spock (often referred to as "Mister Spock"), half human but usually identified as Vulcan, portrayed by Leonard Nimoy, was the science officer and second in command, assuming command in Kirk's absence.
- Doctor Leonard 'Bones' McCoy, played by DeForest Kelley: the ship's doctor, surgeon, and nurse.
- Lt. Nyota Uhura, played by Nichelle Nichols was an especially significant character in the show; her gender and race played a major part of the show's accomplishment in representing a democratic demographic in a major television series.
- Montgomery 'Scotty' Scott, referred to as Mister Scott, played by James Doohan was the ship's engineer and the man responsible for operating the transporter or "beamer", as in the phrase "Beam me up, Scotty." which became a popular catchphrase.
- Sulu, a helmsman, played by George Takei.
- Chekov, the ship's navigator played by Walter Koenig.
